Bakery Improvers - With Respect To Tradition

Breisgau Backmittel can look back at their successful company tradition, of over 60 years in its home city Freiburg im Breisgau, with great pride. The trade of baking in the "capital city" of Schwarzwald is a exceptionally old tradition, lasting for centuries.
Numerous bakeries were established around the Freiburg Cathedral. The untouched nature of the Schwarzwald provided and continues to provide excellent raw ingredients.
1948 After World War 2, during the reconstruction period, Ernst Schmidt, the company founder, inspired by this period, established the wholesale house "Ernst Schmidt & Söhne" for serving bakeries needs. His parents´ kitchen was the production facility, the start-up capital being only 2 egg beater and 2 enamel pots.
In 1950 son Hans-Jakob Schmidt started production his own bakery improver line in a 15 sq.m room. Back then, the only means for delivery was a single bicycle.
In 1952 the market demand already grew sufficiently enough for the decision to construct a bigger plant and to serve over 160 clients with an old DKW platform lorry.
In 1956 sons Hans-Jakob and Elmar Schmidt took over the plant.
1958 was the dawn of "Breisgau Backmittel", now on 100 sqm. and with 2 employees. By inventing the processed poppy seed filling, the company's reputation grew steadily as well as the company itself.
In the 1960's Hans-Joachim Buschmann was taken on board as partner, continuously pushing forward variety and product quality.
1967 was the year when the company was divided into two departments: "wholesale" and "Breisgau Backmittel". Elmar Schmidt took over wholesale business, while Hans-Jakob Schmidt managed "Breisgau Backmittel".
1975 - By this time, the company relocated to a third and even bigger plant.
1990 Founder´s son Hans-Jakob Schmidt was given a mention in the celebrities´ Swiss-US encyclopedia for his merits.
In 1991 after the company's further expansion, the present day headquarters were built with a total of 15,000 sq.m to satisfy the needs of the growing market.
1993 After the death of Hans-Jakob Schmidt the plant was given over to the merited longtime co-partner and managing director Hans-Joachim Buschmann.
2008 Breisgau Backmittel, in its 60th operating year has responded to the steadily growing markets and the growing ambitious demands. Gustav Eisele was the next generation on the managing board.

But even after all these years one thing remains unchanged: high service and quality requirement for the factory.
